This is a photograph of a lion courting a lioness who is not receptive. She is expressing her displeasure by swiping the lion with razor sharp claws that will draw blood and frequently leave scars.
Lion courting behavior is fascinating and often brutal. The male spends days trying to get the attention of the lioness, and most importantly, stimulate an estrogen surge which will make her amenable to his mating attempts. Once the female acquiesces, mating goes on for about 3 to five days. Mating itself takes place about every 15 minutes and results in hundreds of intimate contacts (20 to 50 times per day). If the female has cubs from another male, the new interloper will kill the cubs to help the female go into heat.
